97 year-Old Tai Chi and Chi Kung Master
Duan Zhiliang, 97, ‘national treasure,’ shows students fighting, healing. Elder grandmaster of Chinese tai chi inspires followers.
Duan, who was featured in a PBS Qigong documentary, comes from a family that has a history of serving as bodyguards and doctors for emperors in the Forbidden City.
“It doesn’t matter if you have a very good position — for example, a leader. It doesn’t matter if you are a normal person. It doesn’t matter if you are an artist. It doesn’t matter what kind of job. We need to be healthy. No health, you lost everything, so that’s why I like to do martial arts, to keep heathy.”
At workshops, Duan encourages students to make a commitment to tai chi every day of the year.
“You get longevity,” he said.
