Chronic Stimulation
Historically, human beings experienced periods of intensity followed by periods of recovery.
There were rhythms.
Silence.
Darkness.
Seasonal changes.
Moments without interruption.
Today, many people experience almost continuous stimulation.
Phones.
Notifications.
News.
Messages.
Advertising.
Streaming media.
Noise.
Deadlines.
Social pressure.
Information overload.
The nervous system was never designed to process this level of continuous input without rest. One of the hidden consequences of modern life is that many people no longer experience true stillness.
Even moments that appear restful are often filled with stimulation:
- scrolling,
- background noise,
- multitasking,
- constant consumption.
From a Taoist perspective, this matters deeply… attention is energy. Where attention continuously goes, energy continuously follows. And when attention becomes scattered in ten thousand directions, people begin to feel internally divided.
Not centered. Not steady. Not settled. Fragmented.
