The Throat and Dreaming
Taoists have a practices for dreaming and working with the subconscious mind while we are asleep. Taoists regard the time that we are asleep as a time to let go of emotions while the physical body rejuvenates. If, however, we spend all of our time clearing emotions during sleep, we won’t get into the restful part of sleep that helps our organs, glands, and hormones reset. The Taoist practices of the Six Healing Sounds, the Inner Smile, and the Fusion of the Five Elements help is to clear the deck of emotions and mental energy, so we may benefit from deeper, restful sleep.
In the physical body, the throat center is seen as a bridge between the waking and sleeping mind. By feeling throat open as we drift off to sleep, Taoists believe it is easier to have lucid dreams and even maintain consciousness while our body sleeps. Strengthening the connection between waking and sleeping encourages healing and spiritual progress while we sleep. Further, the relationship between sleeping and waking is said to be a trial run for the relationship between life and death. If we can comfortably relate to sleep, Taoists suggest we can more easily transition from life to whatever happens next.
