Pillars of Survival

Pillars of Survival

We have ways of looking at the world that prevent us from experiencing full aliveness. When we’re in survival mode, excitement and newness and the authentic self can seem far away. There are barriers to thriving and although survival is a good thing, we want to do more than that in our life.

The first one is the idea on my list of ‘pillars to survival’ is that of “more, better, different.” A lot of these posts are talking about goals and working toward more, better, different health, peace of mind, more of a positive impact. All projects are trying to get to more, better and different. But what could be the problem with more, better, different as a way of life? More better different are always changing and escaping our grasp. Playing that game feels  like the present is never enough.

There’s a common saying that “happiness is the absence of striving for happiness.”  J. Paul Getty, at one time one of the richest men in history, an oil tycoon in Texas, was asked, “How much money is enough?” … he said: “Just a little more.” The answer demonstrates this principle. You can chase that forever.

There’s a country and western song, “Younger women, faster horses, older whiskey, more money.” That’s the chorus of the song. It’s a joke for the guy singing it, but a lot of people live their lives that way and it’s never enough, whatever we’ve got. So, being happy starts with being happy with what I have and where I am. It’s not easy, but it’s a strategy for finding peace. And, of course, I write these for me.
