Mung Bean Hitting
Taoist medicine was developed in a time when there wasn’t widespread healthcare, healthcare that did exist was expensive, and individuals had look after their own health and that of their families. One Taoist discovery was the detoxifying properties of mung beans. When the body overheats, it can cause the organs to generate toxins, and fail to eliminate the toxins from the food we eat. One of the most well-known techniques for using mung beans is to detoxify and strengthen the organs and tendons through hitting.
How it works:
- Take a pound of dry mung beans and put them in a long athletic sock.
- Then, put the beans and the first sock inside of a second sock.
- Tie the open end of the socks in a knot to prevent the beans from spilling out.
- The ‘mung bean hitter’ should be tied fairly tight.
- Next, hit along the inside, outside, front, and back of the arms and legs.
- Use the mung bean hitter to hit the abdomen and tap lightly on the lungs and kidneys.
- The strength of the hitting should be the same as if you dropped the hitter from a table.
- Lastly, after the hitting, do the six healing sounds, stretch, or go for a walk to move your energy.
Over time (or maybe the first time) people have noticed heat leaving their body. Along with drinking extra water, this technique can help the large intestine let go of fecal matter. The ligaments, joints, and tendons can start to feel ‘springier’ and rejuvenated. It can be practiced with basic chi kung, martial arts, and standing practices for overall health. If you don’t have a mung bean hitter, you can use your hands to slap the body. I first started these hitting exercises in 2003? They are great and I need to do more of it! But don’t take my word for it! Try it yourself.
