Ergonomics in the Home

The kitchen is a good place to think about ergonomics. Ergonomics is the science of movement to keep people healthy. The more reaching, repetitive motion, bending over, or twisting we do creates issues where we can use ergonomic principles. This is even more important while we are holding heavy stuff. Twisting, lifting, and reaching with heavy items can cause more people to get injured at work and in the home. A lot of people think about these actions at work, but we also need to do it at home. If your employer doesn’t do it for you at work, make sure that you do it for yourself. Ensure that you’re not constantly bending over, over-reaching, or twisting in unhealthy ways—especially with heavy weight in your hands.

When Ford Motor Company was a younger company, some researchers say it was almost guaranteed that certain positions would have rotator cuff issues, because production materials were so heavy. Companies are better now, but dangers still exist.
